Slip Road

It's time for another installment of Speak English along my journey of living in London. We went on vacation in Wales last week. Along the drive up there we kept seeing signs including 'slip road.' So here goes… a slip road is like an on ramp to a highway in the U.S.

Oh yes. And pictures of our Wales trip are coming soon!

Book Decor: Pretty Bookmarks and Journal Wraps

Book Decor: Pretty Bookmarks and Journal Wraps

Cindy with Skip to my Lou is hosting a month of sewing ideas for a handmade holiday season. Pop on over there to see what inspires you.

I joined in on the fun with these pretty, cute bookmarks and journal wraps.

Do you have a book worm or writer you can gift to this holiday season? Decorative bookmarks and journal wraps make a great homemade gift idea. Plus, kids will be excited to dress up their books and journals, making reading and writing all the more fun!

Materials:

  • Ribbon or bias tape
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • ¼” Elastic
  • Book or journal

Ribbon Option:

Create a rolled ruffle about 2 inches longer than the book or journal. Need help making a rolled ruffle? Learn how to make one here.

Fold under each end of the ribbon.

Cut a piece of elastic to fit the book or journal. I used 6 inches here. Insert the elastic at each end on the underside of the rolled ribbon. Sew the elastic in place (a couple lines straight across the elastic, better seen in the bias tape option).

Insert the decorative bookmark in your favorite book or wrap it around your journal.

Bias Tape Option:

Cut a piece of bias tape the length of a book or journal. Unfold one end of the bias tape, fold the end inward, and fold the bias tape back. Cut a piece of elastic. I used 6 inches. Insert the elastic into the end of the bias tape and sew the elastic in place with a couple of lines.

You can use them as bookmarks or book decorations.

Double up on one book for more personality and fun!

Or wrap the strap all the way around a journal to keep it closed.

Refashioned Leggings

Refashioned Leggings

I had scrap sleeves left over from a maternity top that I made. Some think scraps are a waste of space, but I can’t seem to part with mine. I mean, as soon as my scraps go out in the trash I think of a brilliant (well, I think brilliant) craft to turn them into. So this is where I refashion my turtleneck sleeves into a pair of cozy, cute leggings for Peaches.

Materials:

  • Sewing machine
  • Scrap long sleeves
  • Buttons
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors
  • 1 inch wide elastic
  • Pair of existing pants

Lay the sleeves down, with seams facing inward, next to your existing pants. Trim the top of the sleeves straight across, leaving a 2 inch margin above the waist of the existing pants. The 2 inch margin will be used to fold over and insert the elastic for the waist.

Cut the sleeves along the seam from the top to the crotch location.

Sew the front flaps and back flaps together. Once the front and back flaps are sewn together the waist needs to be created. (Doh! I don’t have pictures for this.) To create the waist, fold down the top of the sewn together sleeves and sew in place. Make sure to leave enough room to insert elastic.

And voila! That’s how to make cute, cozy leggings in under an hour. Sew a few pretty buttons on the outside of either leg for additional cuteness.

Mini Scrunchie

My daughter, "Peaches", is finally letting me put her hair up in clips and ties. I made a simple mini scrunchie that you can make for your mini me. Folllow my tutorial on Momtastic.
